NSCS News NSCS Students Visit Washington D.C. for Neuroscience Conference Nov. 16, 2017 The Society for Neuroscience, or SFN, is a professional society whose goal is to advance our understanding of the brain and nervous system. This past year, select NSCS students traveled to SFN headquarters in Washington D.C. to attend SFN's annual conference. Some NSCS students even had the chance to present their own research at the event and used the opportunity to speak to AZ representatives about supporting research. In this same way, the NSCS program hosts an annual "Symbiosis" event, where science and art come together and uniquely blend, each enhancing the existence of the other. This past year marked the fourth annual rendition of the gala where artists from all walks of life displayed a total of over 90 pieces of artwork, making it the largest rendition to date. One of the most interesting pieces was created by an NSCS student, Allie St. Paul. Observers of her artwork became active participants in an interactive exhibit by using their thumbprints to color a neuron depicted on canvas. Thematically, thumbprints, neurons, and the people they make up are all unique, as is St. Paul's signature piece. Maj earned his award for his excellent academic record, his research, and his leadership. Most recently, Maj has been working in the Hruby lab in Chemistry & Biochemistry, where he has combined his love of both chemistry and neuroscience in synthesising and testing novel peptides for use as neuro-protective agents in neuro-degenerative disorders. He also led a preceptor team of the Chemical Thinking basic course in chemistry in developing an innovative teaching technique and monthly review sessions that filled a clear need and has been enormously effective. The review sessions now attract about 2,000 students at each one, almost the entire population of students enrolled in that course. We wish him the best as he goes forward!
